Coaches & Volunteers
Become a Coach / Volunteer
If you are interested in being considered for a coaching position for a WYHA team, you must first read and agree to the Coaches Code of Conduct. By submitting an application to become a coach, you agree to the terms set forth within the Coaches Code of Conduct.
Each coach and volunteer must register first with USA Hockey and then return to this registration session to sign up for this year's hockey season. Doing so helps us confirm the status of your certifications with USA Hockey, however, that is ultimately YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. Ensure you use the same name with which you registered with USA Hockey in the past (i.e., don’t use “Jim” if you registered as “James”) when updating your hockey number registration. In any event, you will need to have a USA Hockey number to complete the pre-season requirements being imposed by USA Hockey each year.
The pre-season requirements include all of the below. Consider getting a head start on these requirements prior to coach selection as there is little time between selection and the first practice. Sometimes only a couple of days.
- Register for a USA Hockey Number.
- Complete your CEP Certification; if necessary (Coaches registration only).
- Complete your background check.
- Complete your annual SafeSport certification.
- Complete your Age specific modules (Coaches registration only).
- Submit the Coaching Application & Registration once the above steps are complete.
If you don’t follow these requirements, you will not be eligible to coach and will not get your volunteer hour credits.
If you attempt to get on the ice before fulfilling these requirements, you will be in violation of USA Hockey, WYHA policies and will be subject to discipline.
Step 1 - Register with USA Hockey
USA Hockey Registration is mandatory every year for all players, coaches, managers, board members, and any volunteers having contact with the players.
Step 2 - CEP Certification
Register and complete your level certification class. Must complete CEP Certification by December 31.
Note: Coaches at the upper-level teams cannot have an expired coaching certification. Coaches at the lower-level teams must at least have a level one coaching certification. Certifications can be expired at lower levels.
CEP Certification only applies to Coaches, not Volunteers.
Step 3 - Background Checks
Complete your background screening online, choose screening for coaches. Background checks are good for two (2) consecutive years for coaches & volunteers.
USA Hockey Requirement - Background Screening
This must be completed prior to any team activity participation.
You can find out when you did your last background check by logging into SportsEngine, click on the down arrow next to your username at the top of the page, click "Account Settings" and then click on "Registrations". Scroll through the list to find "Background Checks" and the dates associated with them.
Step 4 - Safesport
USA Hockey Requirement - SafeSport Training
This must be completed prior to any team activity participation.
SafeSport training or the renewal course must be completed every season.
The Safe Sport Training and Refresher Training are each valid for twelve (12) months.
Once you have completed the Core SafeSport Course, there will be a Refresher Course available for individuals who have previously completed the core Safe Sport course and need to retrain.
